Snook are everyone's favorite, and Miami delivers world-class action for them. From June through September, snook stack up and spawn in Government Cut, providing awesome fishing during a feed on the outgoing tide. These fish range from 6 to 30 pounds and can bring constant, arm-burning action.
Snook are ambush predators that hold tight to structure, bridge shadows, dock lights and inlet edges, waiting for the current to sweep bait past them. When the tide is right and the bite turns on, it can be one of the most exciting fisheries in South Florida.
We target snook around bridges, docks, jetties and inlets where moving water concentrates bait. Snook use the current and shadow lines to ambush their prey, so timing the tide is everything. The outgoing tide through Government Cut during the summer spawn is about as good as it gets.
These fish are structure-oriented brawlers. The take is often a violent strike followed by a hard run straight for the nearest piling or dock, so quick, heavy pressure right off the bite is key to keeping a big snook out of trouble.
Live bait such as pilchards, mullet and shrimp is deadly on snook, and they will also crush artificials and flies worked through the current seams. I match the tackle to the structure we are fishing so you can turn a big fish before it reaches cover.
